It was a unique year celebrated at the display of the 5th Croydon Company last Saturday evening. The launch of YOU (Youth Organisations in Uniform) London at a Buckingham Palace Garden Party provided a once in a lifetime opportunity. The 5th's Pipe and Drum band led by Pipe Major Jon Tickle performed before the Prince of Wales and invited guests, along with other members of London's uniformed organisations.

It was fitting that the Chairman of Croydon's YOU board, Representative Deputy Lieutenant Col. Ian McRobbie, was the guest of honour at the display. He, and the audience of family, friends and church members, were treated to a varied set of talents, with boys from 5 to 15 taking part. Highlights included giant jigsaw puzzles, parachute games, a nerve-racking (though completely safe) vaulting exhibition and a stop-frame animation film to rival Nick Park. The Pipe and Drum band produced the expected polished performance, making the result of hard work and a lot of practice look easy.

Col. McRobbie presented the awards that had been earned over the past year, and spoke with warm appreciation of the effort and enthusiasm of those in and connected with the company. Through the summer the 5th Croydon Company continues to meet on a Thursday evening at Downsview Church Hall and with a band competition and a week under canvas on the Isle of Wight coming up the future is looking bright.
